Chapter Seventeen

The wrought iron gate towered above Carlee, an intimidating but beautifully sculpted reminder that the house beyond was, in Lula’s own words, not something to be trifled with.

The dozens of cameras Carlee had spotted were anachronistic atop the medieval stone privacy fence surrounding the property. Still, she did not doubt for a moment how effective they were. She knew that camera well—it was the exact same model she used at Castle Carlee.

Castle Carlee. It might be time to think of a different name, Carlee thought. Standing face-to-face with an actual, honest-to-god castle perched near the lakeshore made her condo look more like a tenement than any place befitting royalty. Calling it a castle felt like a joke she wasn’t in on.

She pressed the doorbell button next to the gate, desperately trying not to totter in her expensive shoes and faceplant into the sidewalk. Other than a curt buzz, there was no indication it had done anything. The gate didn’t unlock, and there was no obvious intercom system to request an audience.

“Did I have to wear heels?” Carlee whispered, doing her best not to move her lips in front of the camera pointed directly at her. “Eleanor’s going to kill me if I snap one of them.”

“You’re supposed to be the new fashion industry hotness, Carlee,” Ian piped into her discreet earpiece. He and Zack were a block away in an unmarked van, listening to everything via the wire she had concealed under her blouse. “You can’t just walk up wearing sneakers.”

“Are you saying I couldn’t pull that off?” Carlee hissed. She might be sartorially challenged, but she was fairly sure she knew more about women’s fashion than Ian Garnett. “I could be making a statement. Sneakers could be avant-garde, and I could be on the cutting edge.”

“Are they, though?” Zack chimed in, asking sincerely.

“Yeah, Carlee. Are they?” Ian joined in, less sincerely.

She subtly flicked at her shirt, thumping the mic concealed beneath. She had to suppress a smile as she heard Ian shout on the other end, recoiling from the audio feedback she had just sent straight to their headsets.

“Damn it, Carlee. It was a joke!”

“And I had no part in it, yet here I am, going deaf,” Zack added.

She could imagine both of them sweating in the hot van, holding the headphones away from their ears in pain. If she had to suffer in heels, at least they had to suffer too.

She began to fidget, pulling at the sleeves of the nice silk blouse, making sure they were in their proper places against her wrists. Eleanor had walked her through how everything should look as she wore it, and she mentally went down the checklist while she waited for the gate to open.

When she asked Eleanor to borrow an outfit that would help her pose as a member of the local elite, Carlee had neglected to mention the “wealthy person of interest” she was about to interview was also quite possibly a notorious drug dealer. But no matter
